What is your favorite line from Hamilton? I’ve seen so many posts talking about what their favorite line from this musical is, and I wanted to share mine.
“you’ve married an Icarus, he has flown too close to the sun”-Burn
Now there is so many amazing lines from this musical, since each song is so carefully written, and has a multitude of hidden meanings. This is personally my favorite line because it fits beautifully into this heartbreaking song that is sung so well, but also because what the meaning behind the lines is.
In Greek mythology Icarus was the son of the famous inventor Daedalus. But they were kept prisoner in the underground maze called the labyrinth, Daedalus, being the great inventor he was hand made wings with feathers and wax for himself and his son. They were hastily put together in a rush to escape, and Daedalus warned Icarus to not fly to high towards the the sun or too low towards the water. Once they had escaped, the wings held up fine, but Icarus was foolish and flew higher and higher enjoying the wings. Daedalus warned Icarus to not fly too high, but he didn’t listen, the wax melted off his wings and he plummeted towards the water, killing himself with his own poor choices.
Now I can’t think of a better story to compare to what Hamilton did. “ you’ve married an Icarus,” Hamilton was foolish and over confiedent, he didn’t think through his decisions. “he has flown too close to the sun” Hamilton chose to cheat on his wife, and he chose to publicize it to the world, his own poor choices being his downfall, just like Icarus.
This was such an amazing reference that LMM put into his show, Burn is actually one of my favorite songs just from the emotion and pure heartbreak conveyed in it.
